Beginning of Spring Field Work: Preparing for Potato Planting

In our farm, along with the first warm spring rays, the time for active field work has come. Necessary briefings have been conducted, all workers have undergone mandatory medical examinations for work permits in our farm, equipment has been checked, and we do not stop for a minute.

However, this year weather conditions in the Zhytomyr region have influenced our field work plans. A large amount of precipitation did not allow us to enter the fields on time for potato planting. We had to wait for more favorable conditions for operating machinery in the open ground.

Currently, machinery is already working in the fields, performing important spring technological processes. We take care of every aspect of production, starting from preparing the soil for planting seeds in prepared ridges.

One of the important steps is pre-warming the potato seeds before planting. This procedure promotes seed awakening and the beginning of sprouting, which is a key stage for the quick emergence of the first shoots after planting.

A tradition that has already been established is the exhibition for warming elite potato seed stocks in the farm office hall. Here, anyone interested can see the process of potato eye awakening and gradual sprouting with their own eyes. But there is also a purely practical significance in assessing the quality of the seed material. Since it is immediately visible how many eyes have awakened and in what condition the sprouts are, it is possible to make an approximate forecast for the yield from each individual potato plant.

We have chosen one of the main varieties with the largest planting area, the Arizona variety, which is known for its resistance to growth and stable development in stressful conditions of spring open ground. This early variety tolerates spring frosts and summer droughts well, allowing us to maintain stable yield indicators and ensure a quality harvest.

We are eagerly awaiting the beginning of the vegetation period and are confident that our efforts will bring excellent results.
